Welcome to the website of the conference Fifty-Fifty: Critical Reflections in a Time of Uncertainty, hosted by the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) and to be held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston from August 20-24, 2012.

HISTORY

The Fifty-Fifty project began in late 2009 when research fellows at SALISES were discussing the possibility of a common, institute-wide research agenda. With the recognition that the Commonwealth Caribbean would be celebrating fifty years of the independence experience in 2012, (Jamaica on August 6, and Trinidad and Tobago on August 31) it was unanimously agreed that we should engage in a collective research and outreach venture that would critically explore the entire half-century independence experience, its successes and failures, its best and worst practices as well as the possible alternative directions for the next fifty years.
